Friday Faculty Feature: Mrs. Cheema

We are pleased to highlight Mrs. Maham Cheema, our School Counselor, in today's feature. This is the second year that Mrs. Cheema is working with elementary school students, and her second year at St. Viator Elementary School.

Education

Mrs. Cheema’s educational history takes us to the west coast. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of California Riverside (UCR). She continued her studies at the University of Southern California (USC), securing her Masters in School Counseling. Completing her Masters degree before getting married is one personal accomplishment she is proud to share. When asked about her favorite thing working in the educational space, Mrs. Cheema answered, “What I enjoy the most is to understand the students’ mindset and help them navigate through challenges and problem-solving.” Even if she wasn’t a counselor, Mrs. Cheema would still work in schools - just as the School Principal!

St. Viator Experience

We asked Mrs. Cheema to say specific things that she enjoys about St. Viator. She shared, “I love how inclusive everyone is and flexible with student schedules when I pull them out of class to meet with them.” She wanted school parents to know that “[she is] very passionate about being [here]/educating my students, even if I have to drive 40-50 minutes, each way, to work. And she asks that parents be supportive of their students at home, explaining, “The techniques that I use in my sessions should be practiced at home too. For example, calming down strategies.”

Favorites

Here are some of Mrs. Cheema’s favorites:

Favorite color? Purple and Navy

Favorite food? Sushi

Favorite holiday? Thanksgiving

Favorite drink to get your morning started? Iced Caramel Macchiato

Family

On a more personal note, Mrs. Cheema was born on July 28th. She has 2 younger siblings: 1 brother, 1 sister. Her Mom is her Hero. She has a cat named Astro, which has us wondering: Jetson’s fan, or baseball fan? She spends her free time baking, sewing, and going to the gym. The farthest that she has traveled from Chicago was to Pakistan.

We are grateful to have Mrs. Cheema here at St. Viator Elementary school for a second year. As a member of our RTI Team, she provides important support services to our students like social-emotional support, friendship/family challenges, and problem solving strategies. Mrs. Cheema is at St. Viator, in Room 301, on Mondays and Thursdays, from 9:30AM to 2:30PM. If you would like to contact Mrs. Cheema, reach out to her via email at: mcheema@stviatorchicago.org.
