We are pleased to welcome Ms. Emily McCabe to St. Viator this school year. Ms. McCabe is the 7th grade homeroom teacher, and the Middle School Writing and Social Studies teacher. Ms. McCabe did us the favor of answering her highlight questions as a narrative, so enjoy getting to know Ms. McCabe!
I just started my first year of teaching at St. Viator, after attending Bradley University for four years. My favorite thing about teaching is creating relationships with students and watching them grow into who they want to be, and my favorite thing about teaching at St. Viator is the sense of community and support from parents and other faculty members!
Some fun facts about me are that my birthday is February 11th and I have three siblings, two sisters and one brother. I have a 9 month old puppy, his name is Bubsy and my family dog's name is Gus. My favorite color is green, any shade of it! I really like eating cheese, and my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because I love all of the food and watching football with my family and friends. I require at least one French vanilla iced coffee in the morning and have been drinking the same coffee since I was a junior in high school. My favorite book is Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley, but my favorite author/poet is Emily Dickinson. My hidden talent would be that I can complete a complex word search in under ten minutes. Some of my hobbies include taking my puppy for walks, writing poetry, taking road trips, and reading.
I’m super proud to say that during college, along with a team of other students, I co-designed an after-school and summer program for a nonprofit organization near my campus. It centered on social-emotional learning, sharing coping mechanisms, effectively communicating with peers, and yoga as a de-stressor. In terms of traveling, I studied abroad for two weeks in Granada, Spain – I took a writing course, so my homework was to take photos and write about them! If I wasn’t a teacher, I would be an international journalist or a poet. My two biggest heroes are my mom and dad, I really look up to both of my parents and they make my world go around.
One thing that I would tell my students’ parents is that I’m a brand new teacher, so please keep being patient and collaborating with me! I feel incredibly blessed to be chosen as your students’ teacher and I’m doing my best everyday, but your support and communication help me out so much. If you have any ideas or questions, please talk with me! Finally, I’m hoping to create a creative writing club here at St. Viator, so let me know if your students are interested!
Ms. McCabe is settling in well at St. Viator, and we are happy to have her working with our Middle School Students. Be sure to say hello to her when you see her at the north end of the school yard! We hope you have enjoyed getting to know our faculty better, we are proud to share them with you!
