Read Across America Week

Mrs. Iannelli, 5th Grade Homeroom Teachers, organized reading activities for the entire school to celebrate Read Across America Week (3/3-3/7). She shared a calendar with a different way to enjoy reading each day! All students, from our 3 year old preschool through 8th Grade, were encouraged to bring in a favorite book to focus on for the week.

Monday started with a "D.E.A.R." activity: Drop Everything And Read. The whole school stopped what they were doing and read for twenty minutes! Tuesday brought "Lights Out for Reading" where students read with a flashlight in their dimmed classrooms.

Wednesday's theme was "Cuddle Up for Reading", so students were invited to bring in a stuffy or a small blanket for the reading time. This was a very relaxing exercise! On Thursday, we paired our classes so students could "Buddy Up for Reading". It was great to see the younger students so excited to share their favorite books with the visiting older students.

We ended the reading festivities on Friday with a St. Viator version of the "Masked Reader". Drawing from a popular television show, 8 faculty & staff members dressed in costumes, then took turns reading from Dr. Seuss' Hop on Pop. Students tried to guess who was behind each mask.

What a great week! We are so grateful to Mrs. Iannelli for bringing the Read Across America theme to St. Viator Elementary School and organizing our fun activities. Strong reading skills benefit all school subjects, and St. Viator teachers work hard to develop students' reading & comprehension skills, as well as their love of reading. Dr. Seuss summed up the importance of reading in his well-known quote:

“The more that you read, the more things you will know.

The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

St. Viator students demonstrate their strong reading skills on the iReady diagnostic, which they take three times each year. Be sure to check back on the school website, as we will share our iReady progress after the final assessment this spring.
